Mesh fabric works really well as a base layer: the layers you put on top create either a very airy feel or a very warm layer system.

A close-fitting mid layer, such as a stretch fleece, turns every opening in the mesh into a small pocket that stores warmth.

Worn directly under a hiking jacket or trousers, on the other hand, air circulates efficiently, which is a good feature when you start to sweat in slightly warmer conditions.
